The Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (OPFCC) has awarded seven additional road safety grants to community organisations across Northamptonshire. This brings total investment in road safety for 2026/27 so far to £12,562.56, following £113,084.50 invested in 2025/26 – the highest level of grant funding awarded to date.

Road safety remains one of the issues most frequently raised by residents across the county and continues to be a top priority in Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone’s Police, Fire and Crime Plan.

The latest grants have been awarded through the NSRA Road Safety Community Fund and will support practical, community‑led measures aimed at tackling speeding and improving safety on local roads, including in areas around schools.

The new grants include:

  • Upton Parish Council – £1,577.66 towards the purchase of a bespoke pole to host a solar‑powered Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS).
  • Little Harrowden PTA – £644.40 to purchase parking buddies, supporting safer and more considerate parking around the school during peak times.
  • Barby and Onley Parish Council – £4,900 to purchase Speed Indicator Devices to help deter speeding and improve safety for residents and road users.
  • Laxton Parish Council – £1,119 for the installation of a VAS sign to support local speed reduction efforts.
  • Preston Capes Parish Council – £5,000 for the purchase and installation of solar speed signs.
  • Titchmarsh Parish Council – £3,693.56 to purchase and install a VAS sign.
  • Apethorpe Parish Meeting – £1,500 towards speed deterrent measures.

These awards build on earlier grants made this year and reflect the Commissioner’s continued commitment to delivering visible, practical improvements that respond directly to community concerns.

Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone said:

“Road safety is consistently one of the most common concerns raised with me by residents, and that is why it remains a key priority in my Police, Fire and Crime Plan. These latest grants will help communities take real, preventative action to tackle speeding and improve safety where it matters most.

“I am particularly pleased to support initiatives around schools. Keeping children safe on their journey to and from school is vital, and I am actively looking at further ways we can support schools across Northamptonshire to address parking pressures and improve safety at the school gates.”

The Road Safety Community Fund is open to parish councils, schools and community organisations across Northamptonshire, supporting projects that align with the Commissioner’s priorities around prevention, early intervention and community safety. Funded initiatives range from Speed Indicator Devices and Vehicle‑Activated Signs to measures that address unsafe or inconsiderate parking, particularly in areas where children and pedestrians are most at risk.

Barby and Onley Parish Council commented:

We would like to thank the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for awarding us a grant of £4,900.00 from the Northamptonshire Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner’s Road Safety Community Fund. This funding will enable us to purchase two new Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs), strengthening our ongoing efforts to improve road safety and speed awareness.

“The new SIDs will give us another important tool to help protect our Parishioners including, schoolchildren and vulnerable road users. They will help to keep our community safer now and in future years.

“The devices also capture speed data of vehicles, and it is hoped that this data, along with that collected by the Community Speed Watch group, will help build the case, going forward, for more police enforcement within our Parish.”

The Commissioner continues to encourage applications from schools and community groups experiencing road safety or parking issues. Grants of between £500 and £5,000 are available to help deliver local solutions that make a measurable difference.
