PEEL Spotlight: How effectively do the police record crime?

As part of of HMICFRS’s police effectiveness, efficiency and legitimacy (PEEL) inspections, they assess how well police forces record reports of crime.

When they inspect forces’ crime-recording practices, they make sure they adhere to the national standards set by the Home Office. The purpose of this work is to make sure:
– victims of crime receive appropriate support;
– the public has accurate information about crime in their area; and
– forces can effectively plan and use their investigative resources to best effect.

From 2016 to 2020, they did this through separate crime data integrity (CDI) inspections. This report brings together findings from their 2016–20 CDI inspections with findings from our PEEL inspection programme.  A copy of the report can be downloaded here

PFCC Response

The Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner has received this report. This is an area that goes to the heart of the legitimacy of policing, credibility and integrity.

In Northamptonshire the Commissioner stresses that this is an area that the Force has been strong in over a lengthy period of time and she is assured quite correctly that there are resources and processes in place to maintain this position.

She notes that while locally performance is strong there are 3 recommendations in this national report, and she will take action to ask the Chief Constable to review these to assess whether there is any further action that needs to be taken or considered locally in light of these.
