Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone, commenting on today’s announcement, said: “This came as a bolt out of the blue. I’m so disappointed by this decision, which has been made without any engagement with Police, Fire and Crime Commissioners.

“I am directly elected as the one leader in the county who is the voice of the public in police and fire. I am answerable to the public and bring transparency and accountability to their work.

“Having only learned of the Government’s plans today, I am not clear how that public accountability and scrutiny will be delivered after May 2028.

“After two turbulent years for police and fire in the county, and against a national picture of eroding confidence in all public institutions, I know we were beginning to turn a corner in Northamptonshire.

“Since I was elected in 2024, I have worked hard to ensure that police and fire are focussed on the issues that matter most to the public.  Both organisations are strong and stable, moving back to the heart of their communities with a real commitment to deliver on local concerns.

“I’m incredibly proud of my role as the link between services, working in partnership with the local authorities, health and the criminal justice system to make sure that everything we do has one aim – to deliver more, and better for the people of Northamptonshire.

“I will continue to work hard, listen and deliver for the people of this county, including our diverse communities.

“I really believe the work I have been doing with the Chief Constable, the Chief Fire Officer and our partners is making a difference to people. I hope that whatever structure the Labour Government has put in place for after May 2028 is as effective in providing democratic accountability and putting public confidence at the heart of policing.”
