The Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s specialist youth workers have been hosting a summer activity programme to support safer town centres and businesses during the school holidays.

Over five weeks, Danielle Stone’s ASB Early Intervention Team has worked with Neighbourhood Policing Teams to engage young people who might otherwise gather in public spaces.

The work has been taking place in Corby and Northampton to compliment Northamptonshire Police’s Operation Workforce and Operation Alien.

Danielle Stone said: “It’s important our young people have fun during the school holidays but lines can easily be crossed. That’s why my ASB Early Intervention Team has been based in town centres to engage young people in safe activities where they can learn new skills.

“Northampton and Corby town centres are busy and vibrant places, and I wanted to deliver prevention activity that reassured the public and kept young people safe.

“Fun activities provide a natural opportunity where a trusted adult can step in and give constructive advice to help reduce risk.”

Danielle’s specialist youth workers have teamed up with The Cali Lab, in Corby, and Inspiration FM, in Northampton to provide a creative outlet for young people.

The Cali Lab has been in Corby on Mondays to host calisthenics sessions outside The Cube.

Coach Terry leads strength-based workouts structured around teaching young people discipline and respect while reducing time spent on the streets.

In Northampton, volunteer-run Inspiration FM has also been in the Market Square on Thursdays teaching media, audio production, and broadcasting skills to provide a creative outlet, with support from Northampton’s Business Improvement District.

Inspector Scott Farrant, of Northamptonshire Police Neighbourhood Team, said: “The school holidays are an important time to engage positively with young people and help ensure our town centres remain safe and welcoming for everyone.

“By working alongside the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s ASB Early Intervention Team, we can provide constructive opportunities for young people while addressing the issues that can sometimes lead to anti-social behaviour.

“This partnership approach helps us build relationships with young people, prevent problems before they escalate, and provide reassurance to residents, businesses and visitors. Working together allows us to keep our communities safe while encouraging young people to make positive choices throughout the summer.”

Danielle’s office launched the targeted ASB Early Intervention Team in January this year.

Her youth workers are believed to be one of the first teams in the country working directly alongside frontline police officers to provide specialist support to children aged 10-17.

Her ASB Early Intervention Team has also formed a major part of her Safe and Sound Young People manifesto, which sets out to policymakers why investing in strategies early on can protect young people, reduce crime and build safer communities for everyone.
